A person’s walking speed is a key indicator of fall risk and their ability to care for themselves. It is measured inside and outside the home.
Green implies
an ability to perform household duties and a reduced fall risk.
Amber implies an increased risk of being unable to care for themselves without support. Fall risk is also increased.
Red implies a likely difficulty with self-care and a high risk of falling.
Fall risk can be reduced through a strength and balance program and by reviewing the person’s home to improve lighting, remove trip hazards and add physical supports.
